How to share your Wi-Fi on Windows 11

(Wi-Fi on Windows 11)A few months ago, one of my devices randomly decided it didn’t want to connect wirelessly to my internet anymore. This was annoying, but while I waited for it to be repaired, there was an easy fix. I could turn my Windows desktop into a mobile hotspot and use that to get the device online.

This trick can also be handy to have in your pocket if you’re having guests over and want to give them easy access to your internet without throwing your password around.

Here’s how to share your Wi-Fi from your Windows PC. (This was tested using a Windows 11 system.)

  • Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile Hotspot. Toggle Mobile Hotspot on.
  • Select Share my Internet Connection from, and choose the connection you want to share.
  • Select whether you’d like to share your connection over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
  • Click on Edit. Name your hotspot, set a password, make whatever other tweaks you want, and click Save.

Step 1: Access Network Settings

Begin by navigating to the network settings on your Windows 11 device. You can easily access this by clicking on the network icon in the taskbar, typically located at the bottom right corner of your screen. Alternatively, you can press the ‘Windows’ key, type “Settings,” and select the ‘Network & internet’ option.

Step 2: Choose Wi-Fi Settings

Within the Network & internet settings, click on the ‘Wi-Fi’ tab. This section displays the available Wi-Fi networks and related settings.

Step 3: Manage Known Networks

Scroll down to the “Manage known networks” section. Here, you’ll find a list of all the Wi-Fi networks your device has connected to in the past. Locate the network you wish to share and click on it.

Step 4: Share Wi-Fi Network

Once you’ve selected the desired Wi-Fi network, click on the “Properties” option. A new window will appear, providing detailed information about the selected network.

Step 5: Enable Network Sharing

Within the network properties window, you’ll find an option labeled “Share.” Toggle the switch to enable network sharing for the selected Wi-Fi network. This action allows other devices to connect to your Wi-Fi through the shared network.

Step 6: Set Network Profile

While still in the network properties window, navigate to the “Network profile” section. Choose the appropriate profile for your network. If you’re sharing your home Wi-Fi, select “Private” for added security. If you’re in a public space, opt for the “Public” profile to restrict sharing.

Step 7: Confirm Settings

Review the changes you’ve made and ensure that the “Share” option is enabled. Once you’re satisfied with the settings, click “OK” to save the changes.

Step 8: Share the QR Code (Optional)

Windows 11 offers a convenient option to share your Wi-Fi network using a QR code. If you want to simplify the connection process for others, click on the “Copy” button next to the QR code. You can then share the copied code with friends or guests, allowing them to scan it and connect seamlessly.

Step 9: Test the Connection

After enabling Wi-Fi sharing, it’s always a good idea to test the connection on another device. Confirm that the shared network is accessible and provides a stable internet connection.

Now, you just need to connect your other devices to that hotspot. To do that, go to the device’s Wi-Fi settings and find the network name you just gave your hotspot. You should be able to enter the password and connect as you would with any other network.
